  • Although Jessica and Katie Baldwin will be spending their first Father's Day without their dad this Sunday, they will be taking strides to honor his memory.
Tom Baldwin was diagnosed with the aggressive disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in December 2011 and passed away in February this year at the age of 57.
There is currently no known cure or effective treatment for ALS, which affects approximately 30,000 people in the US and 450,000 people worldwide every year.
While Baldwin was still fighting the disease, his wife and daughters learned about the Medved 5K to Cure ALS in Rochester, an annual fundraiser at Frontier Field.
The Baldwins, of Penfield, raised $8,000 at last year's event. Jessica, 26, says they want to continue raising funds to help prevent more families from experiencing the pain of losing a loved one to ALS.
"It was special the first year we participated because we could go home and see him," she said. "I think it'll be a little more difficult knowing he won't be around, but we're happy we could do this to honor him."
The Baldwin sisters will be joined by 16 of their family and friends at the event on Sunday, June 16.
All proceeds from the 5K will go to support the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), a nonprofit biotech in Cambridge, MA dedicated to discovering and developing effective treatments and a cure for ALS.
Jessica said her family's experience may help shed light on the need for more support and awareness.
"I would just hope that in hearing our story, people might want to learn more about the disease," she said.
