This week I wrote the first of a two-part column about residential decks, appearing in your local Messenger Post News paper. I wanted to share this photo of a really great functional application of a deck. This house was a walk-out (almost) and there was no good way to get into the back yard. The garage was tiny, and located at the end of a narrow driveway. The solution included lowering the grade right behind the house so that a garage with a rooftop deck could be aligned with the house elevations. Now there is a covered walkway into the lower level, and an ample outdoor gathering space accessible from the first floor living spaces. Two stairways lead down into the ground level. An added bonus is that the garage and cars are out of view from the interior.
