Since preseason opened on August 20, the boys soccer team has been working to prepare for a run at the program's nineteenth Section 5 title. Early indicators are good according to coach John Butterworth.
“Our work rate has been enormous and our guys have been doing everything we have asked of them in training sessions,” he said. “We are building a high fitness level and we are working extremely well to improve our transition game.”
In Monday's scrimmage at PHS against Greece Arcadia, the Patriots converted six opportunities for goals while allowing none
“We went into the game situation with a few key objectives and we met those pretty well. We were well organized defensively, our finishing quality was excellent, and our game fitness really wore them down,” added Butterworth.
The Pats' roster consists of 10 seniors, 11 juniors, and two sophomores. The team is led by senior captains Eric DeHond, Andrew Para, and Alex Swanger, and their classmates Ryan Hansen, Jason Regruit, Tom Braun, Jon Dubowyk, Mike Lindenmayer, Matt Kanzler, and Alex Vadas. Juniors include Paul Lentine, Matt McLaughlin, Andrew Huntington, Kurt Pruner, Dan Lynd, Cory Terwilliger, Austin Bartlett, Jon Crockett, Jordan Wolf, Zach Andrews, and Aaron Lindsay. Tenth graders Ben Swanger and Christian Amering round out the roster. Seven of the 23 players return after having started the vast majority of the matches in the 2009 season.
After Thursday's 9 a.m. scrimmage with Hilton in the PHS Stadium, the Patriots will use Friday's training session to prepare for the Saturday home opener against Brighton. That match is scheduled for 11 a.m. on the turf stadium field.
