May is National Fitness Month, and Penfield Sport and Fitness is sponsoring a month-long calendar of events to celebrate.
Members and nonmembers are encouraged to sign up with a $25 donation to Special Olympics. That donation entitles participants to 18 events ranging from group fitness workouts to lectures by health experts and family fitness workouts.
Throughout the month, personal trainer Kimberly Whitcomb will offer karate basics and self-defense classes. Whitcomb, herself a black belt in karate, promised that attendees should expect to learn some basic self-defense techniques.
“Each person should leave with an increased level of knowledge, self-confidence and awareness of their surroundings,” said Whitcomb.
In addition, each time a participant takes a class, they are entered into a raffle for a personal training package worth more than $1,500. The winner will be announced at a fitness finale celebration May 31.
“We’re proud to have this opportunity to share our commitment to living a healthier style with our members and people from the community,” said fitness consultant Bonnie Sunderville. “It’s a great way to support Special Olympics while doing something to improve yourself.”
