Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced this afternoon that he has selected former Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green to serve as Executive Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
"With 25 years of experience as a prosecutor, Mike Green will bring valuable expertise in fighting crime and protecting New Yorkers to state government," Cuomo said in a statement issues this afternoon. "His knowledge and understanding of the challenges in reducing violent crime in Rochester and Monroe County will help us make communities across New York State a safer place to live."
"The Governor could have appointed no finer public servant than Mike Green to help promote public safety in New York State," added Lt. Governor Robert Duffy, a former Mayor and Police Chief of the city of Rochester
Green served as Monroe County District Attorney from 2003 to 2011.
Prior to being elected District Attorney, Green served as an Assistant District Attorney for 17 years, including three years as First Assistant District Attorney, where he was responsible for homicide prosecutions in Monroe County.
Green has also served as Capital Crimes Prosecutor, Deputy Chief of the Major Felony Bureau, Chief of the DWI Bureau, and trial attorney in the Major Felony Bureau.
A native of Henrietta, Green is a graduate of LeMoyne College in Syracuse and the Western New England College School of Law.
"I am honored to be selected by Governor Cuomo to serve in this most important role," Green said.
Green stepped down as district attorney last year, after receiving a nod for a federal judgeship from President Barack Obama, but he was never confirmed.
Early this year, he served on a transition team in the district attorney's office, assisting newly elected District Attorney Sandra Doorley.
"As Chairman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee, I look forward to working with Mike in this new capacity to strengthen our state’s law enforcement efforts, provide further support to crime victims and keep our citizens and communities safe," said state Senator Mike Nozzolio.
Assemblyman Joseph Morelle, D, Irondequoit, also applauded Green's selection.
"Mike's extraordinary dedication to justice and public safety made him one of the finest DAs in the state, and I know he will distinguish himself in this role as well," Morelle said.
"His (Green's) skill and dedication can now benefit all New Yorkers," said Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn.
