County Executive Maggie Brooks chose Michael A. Giardino, a retired United States Navy Commander, to fill the position of Director of Aviation for Monroe County’s Greater Rochester International Airport.
Former Airport Director Susan Walsh resigned after pleading guilty to DWI back in January. Her arrest stemmed from an incident on December 22, 2011. Witnesses said Walsh was driving the wrong way on Linden Avenue, causing another driver to swerve and hit the curb. Police say Walsh's car then crashed into another car. Walsh was driving her Monroe County vehicle at the time. When police arrived, one officer reported Walsh's head was slumped over and she looked like she was sleeping.
Giardino has two decades of military experience in the fields of aviation program planning, emergency preparedness, and community relations, in addition to financial, facilities, and human resources management. His appointment follows a national search process that yielded more than 100 applicants.
Prior to his retirement in 2011, Giardino served as the Executive Officer and Deputy Commander of Naval Air Station Key West, Florida, which supports operational and readiness requirements for the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, National Guard units, federal agencies, and allied forces. As the station’s second-in-command, Giardino served as de-facto Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff.
