Penfield High School has been listed among the top 1,000 high schools in the country, according to a report by Newsweek that ranks schools using academic criteria.

The ranking is based on graduation rate, the number of advanced placement (AP) and interbaccalaureate (IB) tests the school offers, and overall AP and standardized test scores. It also includes the number of graduates who attend college.

PHS was listed as No. 574 in the list, which also included local schools like Webster Thomas (No. 441) and Webster Schroeder (441). All of the data for the Newsweek list is reported by the school districts themselves.

Putnam said that making the list is proof of the well-rounded education offered to students, which doesn’t just include AP classes, but traditional regents and honors classes as well. He said that these offering help ensure that many students get a head start on their college careers with accumulated credits.

While they hope for a higher ranking next year, Putnam said the recognition is well-deserved by students and those who support them.

“It really is a testament to our incredible staff and strong parent community. When those two come together, you achieve greatness.”
