End-of-life care doesn’t have to be a lonely experience for elders admitted into a nursing home, and Penfield is the first place where many will see that trend change, locally.
Town and county officials gathered to celebrate the grand opening of two new Green House nursing homes opened on Thursday, Oct. 6. There are only 113 homes of their kind in the nation, and the $2.5 million facilities are the first of their kind to be built in an off-campus residential community.
This month, 20 elders from St. John’s Home in Rochester will move into the new homes.
Complete with private bed and bathrooms, the skill nursing homes are equipped with kitchen and laundry facilities that allow residents to live in a home-like setting.
“It gives those people who have the ability to participate in certain functions the opportunity to do that,” said St. John’s president Charles Runyon. “It makes it easier for families to participate in their everyday lives.”
Although the Penfield homes, located in the new Arbor Ridge community off Fellows Road, are the first in the county, it won’t be the last.
Plans two Green House home on Jefferson Road in Henrietta are also in progress, Runyon said, and it’s tentatively set to open by summer 2012. St. John’s is also planning to build homes in Brigthon, Victor, and Perinton.
“We are so delighted that Penfield was chosen for this project,” said Penfield Town Supervisor Tony LaFountain. “We welcome it with open arms and are looking forward to working together in the future.”
