One of the show’s directors asked for permission to film at Original Steve’s Diner on Penfield Road. The restaurant owner, Steve Janetos, was surprised by the phone call, just one day before the shoot was scheduled.

They were seeking a small town diner atmosphere, and thought the location would be a good fit after reading customer reviews and looking at photos of it online.

“I didn’t believe him at first,” said Janetos, who has been a fan of the show for years.

But sure enough, film crew and cast members rolled in the next day, having driven all the way from New York City. Before stopping in Penfield, they’d done some filming in Fairport.

In the scene, host Elyse Luray as she meets with another history detective to review their clues of the case.

The program, which airs locally on WXXIA (Channel 11) detectives who investigate the background of artifacts, myths, or objects. Many of the mysteries are submitted by viewers of the show. The details of this particular episode were kept secret, and those watching were not allowed to discuss them.

The cast and crew ate lunch before they started filming.

“I didn’t quite know what to expect with TV stars, or if they’d be kind of ornery,” said Janetos, adding that host Elyse Luray ordered his famous Cranberry Walnut Chicken Salad. “But they were very nice and respectful to the customers.”

After lunch, the crew spent the next two hours setting up the shoot and filming it from different angles. When it's finished, the segment will only last between 15-30 seconds. The owner says this is the first time the restaurant will be on national TV, and he looks forward to seeing what the final segment will look like.

David Sloman of Webster is a regular customer who was eating lunch when the film crew began setting up their sound and lighting equipment for the scene.

“(I) was surprised by this welcome intrusion,” he said. “It was fun to watch how these things are put together,” he said.

The show is expected to air in May or June.
