"Black Swan" is a ballet thriller focusing on Nina, whose life is consumed by dance as a ballerina in a New York City ballet company. She lives with her mother, who was a former ballerina and is now obsessive and controlling when it comes to her daughter. For the new season opening production of “Swan Lake,” the ballet company’s artistic director decides to replace the prima ballerina with Nina. But Nina has competition.

Jamey Leverett, Rochester City Ballet’s artistic director, is very excited that one of her former students was the body double for Natalie Portman in the film. Rochester native, Sarah Lane, a former Rochester City Ballet member, worked on that film, which has been receiving positive reviews and has garnered many accolades.

“As cool as it is for Sarah to be a body double for Natalie Portman, we’ve been proud of her for a long time,” said Leverett. “It’s very exciting, because Sarah grew up dancing at Draper Center for Dance Education, the official training school for the Rochester City Ballet.”

Lane started training with the school at age 10, dancing children’s roles at first. But as she grew into a ballerina she began dancing soloist roles with the Rochester City Ballet, said Leverett.

“I was fortunate to accompany her to the Jackson International Ballet Competition,” she said, referring to the Olympics for ballet. Lane won a silver medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a junior competitor, said Leverett. “She was a very gifted young dancer.”
