Trotting up and down the aisles of Beyond Hardware in Canandaigua, Brooklyn — despite being a dog — puts in long hours at the store. The two and a half-year-old golden retriever is the pet of co-owner Matt Shapiro, but make no mistake, Brooklyn isn’t at the store to be a mascot.
“She manages the pet department,” joked Shapiro.
The store is already located in Penfield, but just opened its Canandaigua branch — located at 4406 Routes 5 and 20, sharing a plaza with Raymour & Flanigan, Big Lots and Taco Bell — does have supplies for pets, along with 35,000 other products that range from tools to cooking supplies.
Beyond Hardware opened May 1, and the store’s grand opening event was June 8-9.
For Shapiro and co-owner Jim Marsh, the opening comes at the perfect time.
“This is our Christmas,” Shapiro said. “The six weeks between Memorial Day and the end of July are our holiday season.”
Shapiro and Marsh met through their parents — who were best friends — and in April 2009, the duo opened their Penfield store. When it came to picking a location for a second store, Canandaigua — where Marsh grew up — was the logical choice.
“We wanted to be down here because we really like the area,” Shapiro said. “We thought it was a great market, True Value thought it was a great market, and we just kept looking for the right space (in Canandaigua)."
While this hardware store has plenty of tools to help others improve whatever home care needs they may have, the store is also looking to give back to the community.
Beyond Hardware recently donated $7,000 worth of hardware products to Habitat for Humanity in Ontario County.
