Over the holiday break, one of Penfield's karate academies, Martial Arts America, closed down for a week to renovate their dojo and improve their look.
With a brand new paint job inside their dojo on Penfield Road, co-owner and instructor Kelly Williams has reopened the dojo to resume instruction. Williams said the building’s new look it look bigger and brighter.
"It's been scraped up, scruffed up over the years and it was time to freshen everything up," Williams said. "It gives the place a new look, a fresh look, a clean look and brightens up the place."
Martial Arts America is a full-time karate academy, instructing students in the Okinawan-style Isshin Ryu karate. Williams said there are eight additional instructors who are very dedicated and offer hands-on instruction to their students.
"When I went to college, I decided to really want to run a dojo for my instructor and the owner of Martial Arts America, Matt Dorsey," Williams said. "So we opened up this school around 14 or 15 years ago and it's been a great success since it opened. It's been a really great career to pursue."
Martial Arts America offers both youth and adult curriculums, with about 80 percent of their customers enrolled in the youth program, Williams said. Prior renovations over the school's 15 year history include an office space, a side room for smaller classes and a viewing room for parents to watch their children during their lesson, Williams said.
The business offers a starter package for those interested in enrolling in the academy. This includes a one-on-one initial session, two additional group sessions as well as a uniform, followed by many other programs students can enroll in for a monthly tuition.
