The Smart System Technology & Conference Center — formerly known as Infotonics — broke ground today on a new high-tech Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) lighting manufacturing facility that will immediately add almost 60 jobs to the area.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer — who attended the ceremony — also announced his attention to push for to a secure chip fabrication facility to the be constructed at STC’s Canandaigua facility.
The high-tech OLED lighting will be manufactured by Moser Baer, which has plans to renovate a 9,400-square-foot portion of the STC Center. Construction is currently scheduled to be complete in January. After the construction, Moser Baer plans to expand further, and bring 150 additional jobs to the facility.
“The future is getting better and better, and in the case of Moser Baer, it’s getting brighter,” Schumer said. “This is the kid of thing we’ve been looking for...to bring jobs to the area.”
The expansion was aided by an investment made by Moser Baer, state matching funds and a 3-million grant secured by Schumer.
“This public-private partnership will drive innovative solid-state lighting technologies, create high-tech high-paying jobs, and further establish CNSE’s STC and the Greater Rochester Region as a home for 21st century technologies and green collar jobs in New York’s growing nanotechnology economy,” said Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of CNSE.
Many are looking at the new facility as a positive in the community.
“Anything that adds jobs in the region is a positive thing,” said Alison Grems, president and CEO of the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. “Certainly this (is positive), where it’s a green, and cutting edge from a technology standpoint.”
During the ceremony, Schumer also noted his push to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to establish the Department of Defense’s 90 nanometer computer chip Secure Foundry at the CNSE centers in both Albany and Canandaigua.
